St. Vincent de Paul at St. Matthew
St. Vincent de Paul born in 17th century France, but in early life he was captured and enslaved by Muslim pirates in Africa. Following his escape as a slave, he became a priest and served in parishes in rural France. He soon became deeply aware of issues related to poverty and dedicated his life to helping the poor. For an excellent biography of St. Vincent, the book titled "St. Vincent de Paul", written by F.A. Forbes is available in print and electronic format.
The St. Matthew Conference of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul is one of almost 50 conferences in the Portland, Oregon Council. We are blessed by the generous monetary, spiritual and personal support of the parishioners of St. Matthew Catholic Church in Hillsboro, Oregon. We have been a strong presence in the Hillsboro community since 1968. With the dedication of the new Hertel Center in 2001, the conference significantly increased its ability to serve the poor and underprivileged in Hillsboro.
Today (2023) our food pantry provides food through a "drive-up" delivery system. We have abundant shelf space for non-perishable items, two walk-in refrigerated units and a walk-in freezer. Furniture and large items are stored off-site in "The Big Red Barn". A 16-foot delivery truck is used by our furniture crew to pick up furniture donations and to make deliveries to those who need them. We have a two small vans to use for daily food pickups from area stores.
We have over 60 active volunteers who work on a regular basis, some daily. Corporate donations are received from Albertson's, Whole Foods, Winco, Safeway, New Seasons and many other businesses in the Hillsboro area. We partner with the Oregon Food Bank and work cooperatively with other Washington County and state community services organizations.
